Heat acclimation improves sports performance
"Heat acclimation improves the body's ability to control body temperature, improves sweating and increases blood flow through the skin, and expands blood volume allowing the heart to pump to more blood to muscles, organs and the skin as needed."
But it really sucks when you are doing it. Click the image for the article.

Potential Dangers of "Mud Runs"
![]() |
| Searching for Tony Weathers |
The latest craze in the running world seem to all involve
mud and obstacles - some tough, some ridiculous, some just plain stupid.
All of these races have the potential to be a fun way to spice up your training
and make for a fun day out with your buddies.
More and more stories like the one above (click the image)
are starting to pop up - people being paralyzed, drowning, and
suffering many other types of serious injuries.
Be sure you know what you are getting into when you sign
up for these races, and make sure it is a reputable company putting
them on. These can be lots of fun when the proper safety measures are
in place.

TRAIL RUN THIS SATURDAY!
We will be leaving from the store this Saturday, May 19th
at 5:30 a.m., heading up to Chicot State Park for a trail run.
You can choose whatever distance you want. Most of us are
doing and out and back, so you can turn around at any point.
This is a great way to see the best parts of Louisiana!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:
($1 per person to get into the park)
1. Enough water or sports drink for however long you are planning to run.
Keep in mind, that 10 miles on the trails takes longer than 10 miles on the road. Add 1 - 2
minutes per mile to your pace to figure out how long you will be out there.
There are no water fountains along the trail
2. Whatever nutrition you may need for the distance. You will probably swallow bugs,
but that doesn't count.
3. Bug spray - it is mosquito and deer fly time. Be prepared for lots of buzzing.
4. Dry clothes for after the run. It is an unpleasant drive home for you
and any passengers you may have if you are still in your sweaty run clothes.
5. Most importantly - you will need to bring your sense of humor. This
is not road running, folks. There will be bugs. The air is jungle-like - you will sweat ALOT.
There is a very good chance at least one person will trip, and that might be you.
You will survive - we haven't had a fall-related death out there yet!
But, you will see some beautiful trails, and if you go in about 3.5 miles, you
will see one of the breathtaking bridges that runs through the swampy part of the lake.
Email Edie with any questions and hope to see you all there!

Great article from our friends at Running Times about whether
or not it matters how your foot hits the ground when you run.
It's important to highlight that inserting cushioning into shoes to manage impact does work--heel-toe running in a shoe with a cushioned heel does reduce impact loading rate. In fact, Daniel Lieberman's barefoot running study showed that average impact loading rate wasn't significantly different between shod heel-toe runners and barefoot forefoot strikers. As always, it's important to note that variation among individuals was considerable. Lieber-man reported that for "the majority of barefoot FFS [forefoot strike] runners, rates of loading were approximately half those of shod RFS [rearfoot strike] runners.

Need a little motivation?
Are you one of those people who needs lots of motivation to run? The obvious health benefits and the fact that if you run enough you can enjoy all of our amazing festival food without guilt is not enough for you?? Well, how about the undead chasing you? Would that get you moving? Yeah - me too. Or I would curl up in a corner somewhere and scream like a 12 year old at a Bieber concert. Check out this craziness:

Along the way, Smitty will be running with John Pyle:
"John’s “Patriot Run Across America” is on target to reach Key Largo on May 18, with John at the 100 mile starting line on the 19th. John Pyle left San Francisco on February 28 and has been running across the continent ever since to raise awareness and money for the “Wounded Warriors Project”.
