What we did on our day off!

While we did miss you guys when we were closed yesterday, we decided to take advantage of the day off to get in a little trail run.  On the drive up to Chicot State Park, we were all laughing and doubting our sanity - it was cold and raining, and we were pretty sure there would be knee deep water along the trail and shoe sucking mud - we were right.

Our sanity was only slightly reinforced by the fact that 5 like-minded fools decided to do the entire 20+ mile loop.  (We won't talk about the extra mileage added on when we all took a wrong turn on a campground trail.)  Oh well, 4 hours and lots of laughs (and quite a bit of singing) later, we all made it out, and Aaron officially became a looper.

added together until we reach our goal of 10,000.

Once we do, there will be a get together at the

store with snacks and drinks, and give-aways for the participants.

We are teaming up with our friends at Cafe Cohen (A Premier Espresso and Coffee Bar), for our first ever Coffee Run.  On Saturday, January 14th, beginning at 6:30 a.m., we will have a group run from our store (906 Harding St), followed by coffee and breakfast served at Geaux Run.

The coffee is compliments of Cafe Cohen, but tips will be accepted, with any profits being donated to charity.

They will be serving  from 7:00 - 9:00, so whether you have to run long or short that day, there will be food and drink for you afterwards.

This is combining some of my favorite things...coffee, running, and good company.  It should be a GREAT morning!  Come out and join us!

Cherokee Ridge Horse Farm in Carencro on January 28th, 2012. 

 All proceeds from this event benefit ATRO (Acadiana Therapeutic Riding Organization).

Great vacation idea...

Looking for an excuse to go to Colorado this July?  How about running the Hardrock 100 miler, which starts in Silverton, Co.?  It promises beautiful mountains, stream crossings, and possibly snow fields to run through.  It also boasts 67.984 feet of total elevation change over the 100 miles, the lowest point being 7,680 feet (Ouray), and the highest point being 14,048 feet (Handies Peak).  Bring your oxygen masks, folks.  Click the image above to watch a great video, but don't get too excited....it's sold out...and the waiting list is full.  Maybe next year.

Wyoming’s Marathon Man Breaks Four Records on Antarctica’s Ice

 CHEYENNE--Brent Weigner, age 62, has become the oldest person in the world to run an ultramarathon (any distance over 26.2 miles) on the continent of Antarctica.  Weigner finished fourth in the Antarctic Ice Marathon 100K (http://www.icemarathon.com/) on December 2, covering the 62.1 miles in 15:41:04 despite a wind chill of -12F.  His time broke the previous 60 and over record of 16:12:53 set by Frenchman Henri Alain D’ Andria in December of 2010.  Weigner’s time also bested the previous U.S. record of 17:16:53 set by California man Mike Pierce in December of 2006.  Weigner also set a new world standard for running marathons and ultramarathons on all the continents a record seven times.

 After running four 25 kilometer loops through snow and ice in the interior of Antarctica (79.46S, 83.16W), polar runner Weigner – whose effort coincided with the 100-year anniversary of man reaching the South Pole – was warmly welcomed at Union Glacier Camp by 13-time Everest climber Dave Hahn, among others.   Two other competitors in the 100-kilometer race did not fare so well, and were put on intravenous drips immediately after the race. Weigner, however, said he felt fine and actually considered carrying on to run 100 miles.

 Weigner, a former geography teacher and cross country coach at McCormick Junior High School in Cheyenne, thrives in extreme polar races.  In 1999 he became the first person to run ultramarathons (races longer than the official Olympic marathon distance of 26.2 miles) on all seven continents.  His record of 267 days still stands today.  In 2002, he served as a consultant, helped organize, and ran in the first South Pole Marathon.    Weigner also cofounded and ran in the first North Pole Marathon in 2003.  In 2006, he completed Antarctica’s first stage race and the only 100 mile race ever held on mainland Antarctica.  In 2007, Weigner ran and also served as the onsite race director for the Antarctic Ice Marathon and 100K.  He is the only person in the world to have run ultramarathons at the Geographic South Pole (2002) and the Geographic North Pole (2003).

Brooks Athlete Scott Jurek Attempting to Break World Record

"Beginning tonight at 5pm PST, Scott Jurek will race for 24 hours around a quarter-mile track at the Soochow International Ultra-Marathon 24-Hour Track Invitational in Taiwan. Scott will be attempting to break the current record for miles run in 24 hours. The record is 188 miles."

Of all the things that decline as we age, our running efficiency is not one of them.  There is hope. Each image below is attached to articles on the topic.

Cajun Coyote 2011 was a huge success!!

Congratulations to all of the runners who participated in the 

Cajun Coyote 20 mile, 100k and 100 mile race this

weekend in Chicot State Park.  There were 19 different

states represented, as well as Canada and Japan, and everyone 

we loved the beauty of this trail .

Don't take for granted what we are so lucky to have so close to home!

Cajun Coyote Trail Run

If you are looking for something to do this weekend, come on out and enjoy the beautiful weather while watching the Cajun Coyote Trail Run in Chicot State Park.  The distances for this race are 20 miles (1 loop), 100k (3 loops), or 100 miles.  The entire race will be run on the hiking trail within the park.

The 100 miler and 100k start at 6:15 Saturday morning, with a 30 hour time limit for the 100 miler.  We can always use volunteers, and anyone who just wants to come out and see what someone looks like after they've been running for 24 hours is welcome to enjoy the spectacle.

Runners from 19 different states are participating, as well as Canada and Japan. Can't wait to see what they all think of south Louisiana! These events are always very laid back and lots of fun for everyone.  Hope to see some of you out there!

The store will be open its regular hours on Saturday, from 10:30 - 5:00.

A Different Way to Ring in the New Year

Instead of celebrating the New Year in the traditional fashion, why not

run a 1.2 mile loop around a lagoon in Florida for 6, 12, or 24 hours?  

This race starts at 10 a.m. on December 31st, 

and ends at 10 a.m. on January 1st.
